When heading out for a camping trip, there are some things to consider before getting on the road. Accidents happen, and the weather can change quickly and dramatically depending on the area you’re visiting. Specifically, Zion National Park has been known for flash flood situations, especially in the early spring months. It’s best to know the area, be prepared, and know how to keep cool during an emergency. Always remember to tell someone where you are going and when you will be back in case something happens. Here are some tips and tricks for your next visit to Zion Camp or any campground!
Before You Go
Checking the weather and familiarizing yourself with the area you will be camping in could mean the difference between a peaceful weekend with your family and friends or finding yourself in a difficult situation. Be sure to look at the weather. Here in Southern Utah, we experience hot summers and cooler winters. Be sure to pack sunscreen and a lot of water!
Pack for the terrain and weather. Even though you might be visiting somewhere hot, throw in a sweater or hoodie, just in case. The unknown is a good enough reason to leave prepared. Here are some items you may already own or want to invest in that will have you ready for most emergencies:
Emergency Items
- Clean drinking water. Consider a LifeStraw in case you find yourself stranded without water. You’ll be able to remove bacteria and parasites from any water source. Packing extra, heavy bottles of water is never fun, but it is essential for our bodies to function. Keep at least a gallon of water per person per three days. Having too much water is always better than not having enough.
- 3-day supply of nonperishable food. Throwing in extra snacks is always a good idea, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Pack some granola bars or fruit snacks that can go without refrigeration. Canned foods like soup and canned vegetables could be necessary if you find yourself lost or stranded.
- Firestarter. Fire is essential for warmth and light. A firestarter can offer a way for someone to locate you if you are lost. Additionally, water from an unclean source can be boiled for 1-3 minutes to sterilize it to be safe enough to drink.
- A first aid kit. Minor injuries such as cuts and sprained ankles can easily be managed with a small first aid kit. You can assemble one yourself or purchase one, but be sure that it includes the essentials: adhesive bandages, gauze, hand sanitizer, pain, and anti-inflammatory medicine, etc.
- Emergency shelter. TV can often give us an altered perspective when it comes to constructing a shelter. Cutting down trees and building a shelter is harder than you think. Packing an emergency shelter (like this one on Amazon) can keep you warm and protected from the elements if you find yourself stranded.
There are so many other items that you could include in your emergency kits, such as a map, a backup battery, or a radio. Be sure to include all items you find essential to keeping you and your family safe.
While You’re Out There
As a responsible member of your camping group, it’s important to know what kinds of emergencies could arise. Accidents can happen, especially if you plan on hiking and exploring. Good thing you came prepared with a first aid kit equipped with bandages and sterilizing pads. Having enough water can prevent heat exhaustion and dehydration. Throwing in that extra hoodie could keep you from getting hypothermia and frostbite. Being aware of your group’s health conditions and packing necessary medications can help to have a smooth camping trip.
It’s important to pack accordingly to ensure a safe trip. You don’t want to be in a bad situation unprepared for the conditions. Always take the time to know where you’re headed and familiarize yourself with the terrain and weather conditions. Don’t get caught stranded without extra water and food.
